FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Minnesota Healthcare Network do for patients?

Minnesota Healthcare Network offers a panel of independent primary care clinics concerned with your health and satisfaction. The clinics are located throughout the greater Twin Cities and Western Wisconsin area in inner city, suburban and rural settings.

Why do I have to get a referral?

Many health insurance companies have benefit plans that require you to select a primary care clinic who will provide or arrange for your care. This is not a bad thing! Your primary care doctor is your partner and can help you navigate a complex health care system.

To doctors affiliated with Minnesota Healthcare Network, a referral is communicating to a specialist or facility that they are sending a patient for specific services. However, for insurance companies, referrals have been used to determine benefit levels. We encourage you to communicate your needs with your primary care doctor and his/her clinic staff prior to receiving services from a specialist or going to a facility. Doctors with Minnesota Healthcare Network will make every effort to provide you the service you need or offer you options with a referral to someone who can.

What is a care system or network?

A care system or network is a collection of physicians, providers and facilities that provide or arrange for the full continuum of care. MHN is an independent, physician owned care system.

Why doesn’t my doctor know my health care benefits?

A benefit plan is determined by your employer or the insurance company selected by your employer. There are literally thousands of benefit plans and there is no way your doctor or his/her staff can possibly know them all. However, they do their best to help you maximize your benefits by offering you options.

Do patients pay any fees to join Minnesota Healthcare Network?

No. All you need to do is seek care from one of our primary care clinics. Your insurance company may require you enroll with a specific primary care clinic. In that case, contact your health insurance company using the phone number on your member ID card and request to change primary care clinics.

How much will my health care cost?

It is challenging to predict exact cost due to so many variables that influence it. However, you have the right to understand how much a health care service or procedure will cost. Your health care expenses are based upon the exact services you receive and the discount your health plan has negotiated with your provider (if you have insurance). Did you know that health care providers have differing costs for identical services? Minnesota Healthcare Network doctors can help you find the best value for your individual needs.
